THE CATALINA ISLANDER 1984
Junior Oceanography Program

The Catalina Island Marine Interpretive Center, located adjacent to the Jiffy Wash on Crescent Ave., will be offering a Junior Oceanography program for boys and girls between the ages of 7-12 beginning Friday, August 10.
The Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) will be conducting the free program covering such topics as marine biology tide pool and Island ecology, snorkeling, native Indians, and plankton, among other.

CIMI operates the Marine Interpretive Center which provides visitors with a close-up encounter with the myriads of marine creatures found around Catalina. Tanks and display boards are set up beneath three walk-through gazebos. Hours for the center are 10-4 p.m. daily, excluding Wednesday.

Children who register for the program will have the unique opportunity to work closely with the CIMI staff. All of the programs are “hands-on” activities designed to give students a better understanding and appreciation for the marine and Island environment.

The program will run every day at 1:00pm (excluding Wednesday) and parents are advised to bring their children early to assure a space.
Each participant will receive a wallet-sized Junior Oceanography card. An 8×10 inch certificate will be awarded to those who take part in all three sessions.
